Too Much of a Good Thing?

OK – I know by now you think I am overly interested in Chinese fireworks… That may be so, but I think I am getting cured.

At midnight on New Year’s Eve EVERYONE, it seems, lights off fireworks to “break open the doors of the new year”. The good news was that these fireworks all took place over a relatively short span of time and were complete by about 2:00 am. (See the link below to get an aerial view of New Year’s Eve in Beijing. The story shows what it looked like 15 minutes before midnight, then again right at midnight. The segment showing the fire truck references that 82 people were severely hurt by fireworks – I think.  It takes a second to load and has an ad about shoes for a second – but be patient.)

Unfortunately, we’ve learned that on the 5th day of the new year and all through that night MORE fireworks are set off to get Guan Yu's attention, to ensure his favor and good fortune for the new year. This isn’t everyone at the same time like New Year’s Eve, and these aren’t US type fireworks . . . these seem like BOMBS going off sporadically in the neighborhood ALL NIGHT. Basically we got no sleep last night.  So whereas I was impressed and excited about the cool fireworks a couple of days ago – now? Not so much.

OK – enough about fireworks (at least until next year – grin)
