Amazing Chinese New Year FireWorks...

HI All –

No way to adequately capture what we experienced tonight – Chinese New Year Eve – but will try. Midnight on New Year Eve represents the time when fireworks are used to “open the door” to the new year.  We didn’t realize what lay ahead when the hotel personnel encouraged us to stay up past midnight. In their words, there would be a sea of fireworks.  Well, there was.

Check the link below to view some short videos captured on my phone. Poor quality, but amazing nonetheless.  EVERYWHERE, in every direction there were fireworks. They lasted about 30 minutes with this level of fireworks, and still 2 hours later there are still the sounds of fireworks both near and far. Truly a sea of fireworks. What you will see was just in the neighborhood of our very remote hotel near Xiamen, directly adjacent to Taiwan (Shanghai is a 90 minute flight north of here). We are just on a very small farming island – imagine what it must have looked like in crowded cities!!!!  You may hear me mention that we can see additional fireworks across the bay. Those fireworks are not visible in the video, but what we could see caused the horizon to undulate with fireworks. Every twinkling light in the video is aerial fireworks.

Some of the video contained in the link was taken directly behind our hotel. Some of the guests brought their own fireworks and they were kind enough to specifically invite the foreigners (me and Mo) out to watch the fireworks. We were standing about 100 feet from where these fireworks were fired off.

Amazing stuff, hope it comes out ok.  Enjoy.

Jay
